At WildRoots, we offer immersive nature play programs for young children and their families in Westerly, Rhode Island. Through open-ended, child-led play and exploration in nature, children have the time and space to grow at their own pace while bonding with the natural world. We deeply respect children, their unique personalities and interests, and the unhurried developmental processes of childhood. Our programs are facilitated by a passionate early childhood professional with a background in Reggio-inspired education, early childhood special education, and nature mentoring. Our inclusive programs draw from research-based best practices and a blend of progressive philosophies in the field of early childhood education. We know that place-based and experiential learning within the context of relationships is how humans pass along knowledge about the natural cycles. Our goal is for each child to establish a deeply connected love for this place and all of its critters and plants. This is built through regular outdoor play in all seasons.

Within our holistic approach, caregivers build community alongside their children. As parents, we are all searching for deeper connections and local support and we all need to experience a sense of belonging. Families who choose our programs will have the chance to authentically connect with each other while their children play and explore. Caregivers also benefit from time to slow down, to be present and breathe, and to reconnect with the rhythms of nature and self. Supporting our own well-being directly impacts our children. We understand that each child develops within the unique context of their family system, and we honor and welcome the diverse experiences and perspectives of all children and families. Community is at the heart of the work we do. We are here for our children and we are here for each other. Together, we can nurture the next generation of stewards of the land.

Learning through play is intrinsically motivating and process-based.
Play and exploration foster inquiry and the construction of understandings about the world through authentic experiences.
Play offers multiple modes of expression for young children.
Nature is open-ended and provides the best "loose parts" for play and exploration with all of the senses.
Play in nature supports a strong connection to the natural world.
Nature is a source of resilience and emotional regulation for people of all ages.
Experiencing all types of weather provides varied sensory input, which promotes sensory integration.
Direct exposure to different outdoor conditions builds resilience and connections with the rhythms of the natural world.
Time outside is important on all the days, not just the "fair weather" days!
Children have rights, a voice, and citizenship from infancy, and deserve respect and inclusion.
We want to trust and empower young children to follow their interests and lead their own learning through play and exploration.
Children have many different tools for learning and expressing themselves.
Taking risks during play gives children an opportunity to satisfy their biological drive to engage in play with perceived dangers.
Risky play supports physical, cognitive, and social-emotional competencies.
Children who have opportunities to take risks through play develop strong risk-assessment skills.
Supportive communities are vital to the human experience.
Relationships are at the center of all teaching and learning.
Children need nature mentors who share a passion for the natural world, experiencing the wonder alongside them. These adults model stewardship and preserve time for
nature play.
